UC San Diego sees student math skills plummet
- FOX NEWS
It’s been said time and time again that the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed significant harm to children’s academic progress in the public education system. However, the pandemic isn’t and wasn’t the sole cause but an amplifier of the several underlying issues within the government provided education system itself. Having been on the inside already I’ve witnessed many of things that have served students no benefit, such as:
No consequences for poor actions and performance
Students know they can skip an entire course or not submit or attempt any assignment for the entire semester and will be given a C at the end of the term because admin won’t permit educators to fail them.
Grade inflation
Caused by what was stated in the earlier point as well as for average or struggling students- if they have unsatisfactory marks the teachers, based off parent complaint or student complaint or concern, are forced to improve (inflate) the grade.
Excessive and pointless standarized testing
Here in GCPS the per pupil expenditure is around $7-8k, which approximately half to two-thirds of those funds are going to the costs of administering those exams.
Social Promotion
It’s the practice of passing student who’ve shown no mastery in a particular subject so that way they can stay in the “appropriate age-group” of their peers. The argument is there is no place to put them - however, I would advocate back into the classroom regardless of age. If colleges have successfully operated with multi-aged classrooms I believe the K-12 system can too.
Anyhoo…
All of these things I’ve witnessed and have had FIRSTHAND experience of being reprimanded by public & elite private school administration for desiring to partake in failing my students- which I mean by not preparing them for the future by not failing them. I am of firm belief, if they didn’t do any work, they EARNED their failing grade. Just like hardworking, dedicated students performed and excelled for that A.
Due to witnessing how broken the system from the inside and having witnessed the crucifixion of well-meaning educators who attempted to fix the system, it is truly not a shocker for the mass exodus of truly passionate and knowledgeable educators of this day and age…… The same goes for the number of families that are waking up and realizing that celebrating your high school graduate who can not read a college textbook, nevertheless a harry potter novel, because the “words are too big” or “hard to pronounce” is a big problem (this not applying to students whose first language isn’t English- they are exceptions as any learner of non-Native languages).
So, high school graduates not able to hack college in the age of Al making headlines… isn’t going to change anytime soon… but do know you what can change?
