A Word from Our Founder….

Hey There,

My name is Shantell and I'm the founder of The Academic Medics and creator of #OurGiveBack events.

This fundraiser is one that is special to my heart because it hits home for me every holiday.  I remember last year, when I adopted a classroom of elementary school students and had to think about how I'd miss teaching all of my students as they'd return back to their original teacher the following semester. There was one student, a little girl,  who'll forever stay on my mind. She confided in me that her and her siblings were living in a hotel and how things weren't so easy for her family. Throughout the semester I would watch her overcome her situation when  she was in class- she always had a huge smile on her face and a giggle at one of my famous shenanigans. You could've never guessed what was happening on behind the scenes.... It reminded me of my family's humbling times in the past. Growing up, my family had experienced struggles. I remembered a year or two where I lived out that little girl's scenario myself, and if it wasn't for community collaborations and donations,  I wouldn't know how  my family made it during  the difficult seasons we've faced.

Here in Gwinnett, there are a lot of families that are one-paycheck away, if not already a payment late from homelessness. Though homelessness isn't as visible or evident throughout the county like in some others, it still exists. This year we hope to help ease the struggles that many families are facing by gifting necessities and even some toys to those in need. And we need your help to reach out to as many families as possible. We currently have partnered with 2 hotels to assist families that have been in residence at these hotels.

Our small goal of $500 is to be able to sponsor at minimum 5 families, those in hotels, as well as help out a few families that are currently living out of their cars/on-the-street. Our reach goal is $1000 to be able to reach 10 families. A small donation of $5 or $10 can go a long way, even a $1 if we share this fundraiser with others and pass around the news. That's counting on a minimum of 500 people in the entire county to help us reach this goal!

With your donations and contributions we can make this happen! Please share and spread this message as we'll be taking donations all the way up to Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020-- as we'll be out on Dec 24th & 25th spreading families all of our community's love and cheer! #socialdistancestyle
